She has always had a keen interest in art but it was during her many overseas travels and visits to art museums that her interest in art became a passion. Some of the museums she visited is the Louvre, Musee D’Orsay and the Dali Museum in Paris, Guggenheim in New York, the National Museum of Art in Boston, the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade, The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Seattle Art Museum, the Mucha museum in Prague and Rijks- and Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The Impressionists painters are her favourite, specifically Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet and Manet.
She started painting in 2005 while living on their farm in the Waterfallsrivier Valley near Lydenburg for a short period. The beauty of nature all around her inspired her creativity and she enrolled in art classes in order to find an avenue for expression. She continued with art classes whilst living first in Pretoria and then Johannesburg but interestingly enough her art thrived once she moved back to their farm in the Waterfallsriver Valley in 2013. Here she recently added a studio to her house from where her art can fully express itself. This will in future also serve as a gallery.
Marlene prefers oil as a medium and her favourite subject is woman, specifically the mystique of womanhood. She enjoys painting objects which touch her soul and tell a story. This also gave birth to this website which was named after the word catharsis meaning “purification of emotions through art”.
